HOW YOU'LL MAKE AN IMPACT

Job Summary:

  • Records a coded summary of malignant solid and hematopoietic tumors, and malignant/benign central nervous system (CNS) tumors diagnosed or treated at Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare (TMH).
  • Enters annual case follow-ups for outcomes tracking and survival statistics.
  • Reviews patient medical records, coordinates with cancer center physicians, and communicates with external departments and organizations.
  • Abstracts, follows-up, and promotes quality assurance (QA).
  • Submits charts to Cancer Registrar/Certified (JC: 239002) or Supervisor/Cancer Registry for approval before processing.
  • Participates in regular Rapid Cancer Reporting System (RCRS), state, and National Cancer Database (NCDB) submissions, and QA.
  • Works closely the Cancer Registry to monitor operations including (but not limited to) coordinating workflow, determining work allocations, resolving problems and performing other duties (as assigned) regarding the Standards of Hospital Quality Assurance Program, The Joint Commission (TJC), American College of Surgeons (ACOS), Commission on Cancer (CoC), National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC), Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA), Florida Cancer Data System (FCDS) and other regulatory agencies.
  • Assists with Cancer Committee meetings, and other duties related to cancer center accreditation maintenance (as required).
  • NOTE: The Cancer Registry is a highly technical and regulated disease database and reporting system that provides essential information to healthcare providers, health administrators, researchers, and public health officials to better monitor and advance cancer treatments, conduct research, and improve cancer prevention and screening programs.
  • Registry data collection (including case finding, abstracting, and follow-up) is a required by state law and the ACOS CoC, the cancer program's accrediting agency as a comprehensive community cancer program.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED TO APPLY

Required Education:

  • Associate degree (or equivalent (i.e., sixty (60) semester hours (or equivalent))) in any field from an accredited educational institution, including two (2) semesters (i.e., six (6) semester hours (or equivalent)) of college-level anatomy and physiology passed with a “C” or better.* * The minimum education requirements are prerequisite to sit for the Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) examination.

Preferred Education:

  • Associate degree in a medical field with a cancer registry or health information focus.

Required Experience:

  • One (1) year of cancer registry, electronic medical records (EMR), or related healthcare experience

Preferred Experience:

  • Two (2) or more years of cancer registry work experience in a health information setting. 
  • Experience using the Microsoft (MS) Windows operating system (OS). 
  • Intermediate/advanced database experience. 
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Excel. 
  • Intermediate computer skills. 
  • Understanding of cancer diagnosis, prognostic factors, staging, and treatment. 
  • Knowledge of reporting rules, including (but not limited to) how to code primary site and histology from the International Classification of Oncology manual and Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) instructions.
  • Knowledge of what documentation is required to confirm a diagnosis.
  • Knowledge of how to differentiate recurrent cancers from new primaries. 
  • Knowledge of how to stage cancers in accordance with the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) Staging Manual. 
  • Knowledge of differences between initial treatment courses and subsequent treatment courses. 
  • Knowledge of differences in state requirements versus those of the ACOS CoC. 
  • Knowledge of historical references and how to apply and code according to diagnosis year when finding missed or backlogged cases. 
  • PowerChart proficiency. 
  • Comfortable using multiple medical record platforms. 
  • Comfortable with data visualization, and report writing. 
  • Attention to detail.

Required Certification/License/Registry:

  • None at hire. CTR credential from the National Cancer Registrars Association within eighteen (18) months post-hire (after no more than three (3) attempts). Florida Cancer Data System (FCDS) abstractor code* (or in process of obtaining) within eighteen (18) months post-hire * An alpha/numeric code certifying as an approved Florida abstractor. All registrars/abstractors working in the State of Florida are required to obtain an individual code.
